Local teachers can bring Olympian into class as virtual mentor
Classroom Champions invites teachers to apply to transform their classrooms with an Olympic or Paralympic mentor for next school year
April 19, 2017
Calgary, AB (April 19, 2017) – With the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea around the corner, Classroom Champions is looking to leverage the excitement surrounding the games by accepting new applications for outstanding educators to kick off the 2017-2018 school year.
Starting in September 2017, Kindergarten to Grade eight teachers in and around Calgary will have the opportunity to partner with Canadian Olympians and Paralympians thanks to the continued commitment of Shaw Communications Inc.
Classroom Champions pairs teachers with Canadian Olympians and Paralympians who use video lessons and live video chats to engage students and encourage them to recognize their potential, set goals, and dream big. Classroom Champions is the first program of its kind in Canada to bring these elite athletes into schools to provide ongoing mentorship. As part of the program, participating classrooms are equipped with the latest technology tools to help teachers incorporate digital engagement into their curriculum.
Helen Garrioch, a teacher at Pineridge School, has participated in the Classroom Champions program for several years and knows how much the program has to offer her and her Grades three and four students. “I have found that Classroom Champions provides me a vehicle in which to deliver a variety of topics in a meaningful way,” says Ms. Garrioch. “The students enjoy learning about their mentor and are excited when they get to complete the monthly challenges from their mentor.”
Canadian Paralympic snowboarder Michelle Salt is one of the mentors in Calgary classrooms. “I love sharing my journey with the classrooms of the Calgary communities,” says Salt. “Through the good, bad, and great times, I know that my message is being heard and practiced by my students!”
Teachers who are passionate about increasing their students’ social, emotional, academic, and digital literacy skills, and who want to pursue greater professional development and networking opportunities, are invited to apply to Classroom Champions before May 1 through www.classroomchampions.org/apply.
With the support of Shaw Communications, Crescent Point Energy Corp., ConocoPhillips, Mawer Investment Management, Allardyce Bower Consulting, and Annapolis Capital, Classroom Champions currently supports teachers and classrooms at Belvedere Parkway School, Children’s Village School, Chris Akkerman School, Dr. Gordon Higgins School, Guy Weadick School, Ian Bazalgette School, Keeler Elementary, Langevin School, Pineridge School, and Sherwood School. Athlete mentors in the area are Olympian Bailey Bram, Paralympian Kieran Block, Sam Effah, Olympian Akeem Haynes, Barrett Martineau, Paralympian Michelle Salt, Olympian Monique Sullivan, Olympian Scott Tupper, and Olympians Tristan Walker and Justin Snith.
